The most common problems with the 9940B tape drives is the failure of the motor flex. There is a certain vintage of the flex that was produced using a different material than in the 9940A units. After a period of time, the material breaks down and cracks. The symptoms range from tapes being stuck in the drive, to motor diagnostics failing during drive wake-up testing (at power on). We have been very successful at repairing these units.
The next most common problem we see is shipping damage. Most of the time, we can fix these drives if the head hasn’t been damaged beyond repair. Great care should be taken when handling and/or shipping these drives.
